TAX AND THE CLIMATE CRISIS

The world is facing a major climate and environmental crisis.
Politicians have promised action to dramatically cut emissions.

We need to reshape our economy in a way that’s fair and sustainable.
The tax system can help. Tax Justice UK is campaigning to ensure that any tax reform to support a green transition is done in a way that is fair, popular and effective.
Taxes can encourage green behaviour. Taxes can also be used to reduce environmentally damaging activity.

Through the tax system we can encourage people and businesses to make the most of emerging low carbon opportunities, as well as raise funds to support government action. It's crucial that the wealthiest pay their fair share. Middle and low earners need to be protected.

Together with a range of partners from the Green Alliance to Greenpeace and Oxfam we have set out principles for how the UK government should reform the tax system to help steer our economy to a fair net zero carbon future.

However, there are real limits to the role that the tax system can play. Tax reform will have to sit alongside government regulation and investment.

We will campaign to ensure that the tax system is redesigned to tackle the climate crisis.
