SUGGESTED POINTS TO INCLUDE
Please write your own letter in your own words. Letters that are copied and pasted won't get read! Feel free to use some or all of the bullet points below for inspiration, but do also add your own thoughts and perspectives.
CORPORATE TRANSPARENCY
- Transparency of taxes paid by multinational companies needs to be improved.
- The government now has the power to publish multinationals’ country-by-country reporting.
- This would allow us to see which companies are carrying out business here, but shifting all their profits offshore.
- Tax authorities in other countries, for example in sub-Saharan Africa, would also benefit from this transparency.
- Can I ask you to request that the Treasury make use of it without further delay?
OVERSEAS TERRITORIES
- The UK is too tolerant of the role its Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories play in enabling tax avoidance.
- Including these territories, the UK is the world's largest financial secrecy jurisdiction (tax haven).
- While there has been some progress, for example recent legislation requiring the Overseas Territories to create public registers of beneficial ownership, more needs to be done.
- The UK has actively encouraged its dependent territories to become tax havens.
- Will you ask the government to enforce transparency and help them to develop alternative business models?
FAIRNESS
- Why, at a time of savage cuts to public services and benefits, has the government cut the corporate tax rate?
- The government’s own analysis shows that this has cost billions of pounds, while the expected benefits are uncertain.
- Even business groups have argued that these cuts are unnecessary.
- Will you ask them to reverse this needless damage?
